The 3CORD method
The 3CORD method: understand, talk, practice, walk
Quick answer
The 3CORD method has four steps, always in the same order: understand what is happening, talk about it in a way that does not end badly, practice something concrete, and walk it as a shared habit. Skipping the first produces arguments; skipping the last produces good intentions that last two weeks.
The four steps
Understand
Name what is actually happening, beyond the latest thing you argued about. Most couples argue about the topic rather than the dynamic, which is why solving the topic changes nothing.
Talk
Have the conversation with a structure that avoids the usual ending: one topic at a time, listen before responding, and one concrete request at the end.
Practice
Do something small that same week. What does not get practiced changes nothing, however well it was understood.
Walk
Turn it into a shared, sustained habit. A change that lasts three weeks and gets abandoned leaves a worse taste than never starting.
Why the order matters
Almost every attempt to fix a marriage starts at step two: talking. And talking without having understood produces the same old argument with better wording.
Step four is the most ignored and the most decisive. Anyone can sustain a change for five days. What separates couples who improve from those who do not is what happens in week six, when there is no novelty and no motivation left.
How it applies across 3CORD
- The site guides cover understanding and talking.
- The tools cover practice: you use them today, not next week.
- The journeys and the daily devotional in the app cover walking, which is the part that needs both of you, every day.
3CORD offers faith-based support and educational content. It is not therapy, clinical counseling, or medical, psychological, legal or financial advice.
