Emotional distance in marriage: how to reconnect

Reconnecting

Twenty-one days to stop being roommates.

21 days · 10 minutes a day · done together

Quick answer

Reconnecting is a 21-day journey of about 10 minutes a day to work together on one concrete area: emotional distance in marriage. Each day brings a short reflection, a guided conversation and a small practice. You start it when you need it, each at your own pace, and whoever starts it can invite their spouse to walk it together.

Who this journey is for

  • You get along but no longer seek each other out.
  • You talk logistics and almost nothing else.
  • One of you feels the other has gone distant.

If none of this sounds like you, another journey probably fits better. The free assessment points to it in five minutes.

What you will learn

  • To notice and answer each other’s bids for connection.
  • To hold fifteen daily minutes with no screens.
  • To bring back questions that organize nothing.
  • To act with warmth before the feeling returns.

What each day looks like

  1. A short reading

About what is happening, without blaming either of you.

  2. A guided conversation

One concrete question, with a way of asking it that does not end in a fight.

  3. A practice

Something small to do that same day. This is the part that changes something.

  4. At your pace, and together if you want

Each of you marks your own days. If you invite your spouse, you both see each other’s progress.

When did we become roommates?

Honestly recognize the state of your connection today, without blame. · Revelation 2:4-5

In the book of Revelation, Jesus speaks to the church in Ephesus. It was a hardworking, persevering church that didn't tolerate error. From the outside it looked exemplary. But Jesus tells it something painful: you have left your first love. And then He gives three instructions: remember where you have fallen from, repent and go back to doing the things you did at first.

This passage speaks of the church's relationship with Christ, but it describes very precisely what happens in many marriages. They keep functioning, keep up, work hard, raise the kids. But first love —curiosity, tenderness, wanting to be together— has slowly been left behind.

Nobody decides one day to stop seeking their spouse. It happens gradually: work, kids, exhaustion, screens. Every day the urgent is chosen over the important, and one day you discover you haven't had a real conversation in months.

The way back Jesus proposes is simple: remember, return, do. He doesn't say "feel again," but "do again the first works." Feelings tend to follow actions, not the other way around.

Today you will begin with the first step: remembering and recognizing. Without blaming anyone. Just looking honestly at where you are, so you know where you're coming back from.

To practice today

  1. Each of you rate from 1 to 10 how connected you feel to the other today. Share the number without arguing about it.
  2. List what you used to do at the beginning of the relationship and no longer do (calling, going out, writing to each other, talking late into the night).
  3. Choose just one of those "first works" to do this week.

To talk about

  • When was the last time you felt we were truly connected?
  • What do you think slowly pulled us apart without our noticing?
  • What do you miss about us?

To pray

Lord, we recognize that we have left our first love, with You and with each other. We don't want to merely function; we want to find each other again. Help us remember, return and do again what we did at first. Rekindle what has been fading. Amen.

Frequently asked questions

How long is the Reconnecting journey?

21 days, at about 10 minutes a day. You can pause and pick it up again: progress counts completed days, not calendar days, so a break does not force you to start over.

Do we both have to do it at the same time?

No. Each of you keeps your own progress and can open whichever day you need. Whoever starts the journey can invite their spouse from the app; if they join, each sees the days the other has done. And if your spouse is not ready yet, you can walk it alone.

Do I need to pay to start?

No. Day 1 of every journey is always free. To keep going, the app has a 7-day free trial with no card, and if one spouse subscribes, the other has access too.

What if halfway through we realize we need professional help?

That is a good sign, not a failure of the journey. These journeys accompany and practice; they do not replace counseling or therapy. The healthy move is to do both.
