Money fights in marriage: what is really underneath them

Talking about money without fighting

Fourteen days to actually agree on how you handle money.

14 days · 12 minutes a day · done together

Quick answer

Talking about money without fighting is a 14-day journey of about 12 minutes a day to work together on one concrete area: money fights in marriage. Each day brings a short reflection, a guided conversation and a small practice. You start it when you need it, each at your own pace, and whoever starts it can invite their spouse to walk it together.

Who this journey is for

  • Every money conversation ends in blame.
  • Some purchases get hidden or minimized.
  • One feels audited and the other feels kept in the dark.

If none of this sounds like you, another journey probably fits better. The free assessment points to it in five minutes.

What you will learn

  • To name what money means to each of you.
  • To hold a short monthly meeting with the numbers in front of you.
  • To set a consultation threshold that is equal for both.
  • To put the whole debt on the table in one conversation.

What each day looks like

  1. A short reading

About what is happening, without blaming either of you.

  2. A guided conversation

One concrete question, with a way of asking it that does not end in a fight.

  3. A practice

Something small to do that same day. This is the part that changes something.

  4. At your pace, and together if you want

Each of you marks your own days. If you invite your spouse, you both see each other’s progress.

Where our treasure is

Discover what money means to each of you: security, freedom, control, enjoyment. · Matthew 6:19-21

Two people can look at the same bank account and see completely different things. For one, that money is peace of mind: "we finally have a cushion." For the other, it is possibility: "we can finally take that trip." Neither is wrong. Money simply means something different to each of them.

Jesus teaches us not to store up treasures on earth, where everything wears out and can be lost, but in heaven. And He concludes with a sentence that explains everything: where our treasure is, there our heart will be too. Money is not neutral. It reveals what we love, what we fear and what we seek.

That is why many fights about money aren't really about money. When she gets anxious because he spent on something unplanned, perhaps what is triggered is her fear of insecurity. When he gets upset because she checks every expense, perhaps what is triggered is his need to feel free and respected. If you only argue about the purchase, you will never get to the bottom of it.

Today you won't talk about figures. You will talk about the heart. Each of you will discover what money represents to you, and what emotions it stirs. Understanding this in the other will give you patience for everything ahead.

And you will also ask a deeper question: is our heart set on money, or on the One who gives it to us?

To practice today

  1. Each of you silently complete these sentences: "For me, money means…", "What worries me most about money is…", "What I enjoy most about having money is…"
  2. Share them by turns. The listener doesn't comment: they only ask "why?" and listen to the answer.
  3. Together, write one sentence that sums up your difference. For example: "For me it's security; for you it's freedom."

To talk about

  • What emotion do you feel when we review the state of our finances?
  • What do you think I feel when we talk about money?
  • Where do you feel our heart is set as a family today?

To pray

Lord, You know our hearts and what money stirs in us. Help us understand each other and not judge. We want our treasure to be in You and not in what wears away. Teach us to manage what You give us with free hearts. Amen.

Frequently asked questions

How long is the Talking about money without fighting journey?

14 days, at about 12 minutes a day. You can pause and pick it up again: progress counts completed days, not calendar days, so a break does not force you to start over.

Do we both have to do it at the same time?

No. Each of you keeps your own progress and can open whichever day you need. Whoever starts the journey can invite their spouse from the app; if they join, each sees the days the other has done. And if your spouse is not ready yet, you can walk it alone.

Do I need to pay to start?

No. Day 1 of every journey is always free. To keep going, the app has a 7-day free trial with no card, and if one spouse subscribes, the other has access too.

What if halfway through we realize we need professional help?

That is a good sign, not a failure of the journey. These journeys accompany and practice; they do not replace counseling or therapy. The healthy move is to do both.
