Hard conversation plan: preparing it before having it

4 minutes · free, no sign-up, nothing sent anywhere

Quick answer

A hard conversation goes better prepared: one topic only, a chosen moment rather than an improvised one, a written opening sentence and an agreed exit. The opening sentence matters most, because a conversation that starts with a reproach does not recover.

A grid with one cell lit

Almost every hard conversation in a marriage happens improvised, at the worst moment and with three topics inside it. That is why they end badly, and why starting the next one costs more.

Preparing four things changes the outcome considerably. The one that matters most is the opening sentence: the first fifteen seconds decide whether the other person listens or defends.

This is for whoever is going to raise the topic. The other person does not need to know about it.

Fill it in together

One. If there are three, pick the heaviest and save the others for another day. Chaining topics is what turns a conversation into a trial.

If the answer is "that they understand how I feel", that is fine and not enough. What would you want to be different next week?

Never right after the episode, never at eleven at night, never in front of anyone. Walking usually works better than sitting face to face.

The part that most determines how it goes. Do not start with "always", "never" or "you". Start with what you want to protect.

Something true, not a technique. Acknowledging what they do lowers the initial defense considerably.

What we do if this goes badly. Having it decided in advance keeps the exit from being a slammed door.

All of this happens in your browser. Nothing is sent to any server and nothing is stored anywhere: when you close the page it is gone. That is why the result gets copied.

What to do with it

  • Read it once beforehand and then put it away. You do not need to carry it or read it in front of the other person.
  • If a second topic appears mid-conversation, note it mentally and do not raise it. It is the rule that saves the most conversations.
  • If it ends with no agreement but no fight, it went well. Most hard topics need two or three conversations, not one.

Frequently asked questions

Is preparing a conversation not artificial?

The artificial version is the improvised one: three topics chained at eleven at night after an episode. Preparing is not performing; it removes from the conversation everything that did not need to be in it.

What if they get defensive anyway?

It can happen, especially the first few times. What preparation does change is your side: you will not add the rest of the list or answer defense with another accusation, and that alone changes how it ends.

How many hard conversations in a row can you have?

One a week is a rhythm most couples sustain. Two in the same week usually merge into one large argument, which is exactly what this tool tries to prevent.
